Major sectors, such as Iron and Steel, Leather, Textiles, Agro-based industries, Gems & Jewellery and Chemicals have a prominent role in the industrial climate of the State The State has offered several incentives for industries that have reached production stage The State has a number of Industrial Parks/ Industrial Growth Centres to set up manufacturing hubs Opportunities Galore For establishing deep sea port facilities at Sagar Island, including rail road connectivity and construction of a rail-cum-road bridge, over the river Muri Ganga Government ofWest Bengal is also taking steps to construct a port city at Rasulpur, near Contai in East Medinipur The Iron and Steel sector offers a great potential in the state. A major advantage is that West Bengal has an easy access to raw materials. Possibilities of export from this area will provide a further fillip to this sector The state has been allotted 8 coal blocks out of which 6 are being developed through Public Private Participation (PPP) mode by WBMTDC and 2 by DVC H-Energy (P) Ltd, the energy arm of Hiranandani Group, is setting up 4 million tons a year floating storage and re-gasification unit (FSRU) off Haldia coast, West Bengal. The floating LNG import terminal would service major districts ofWest Bengal, including Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Burdwan, Hooghly, Howrah and Kolkata Development of a dedicated Container Terminal at Diamond Harbour on the eastern bank of river Hooghly has been recommended by a high-powered committee, set up by the Government of India. The estimated project cost is around Rs 1530 crore A unique, 2000-acre industrial township is being set up at Andal, near Durgapur. Known as Sujalaam theSkycity, the township will integrate India's first private greenfield airport at Andal with dedicated industrial and residential zones The Amritsar-Delhi-Kolkata Industrial Corridor (ADKIC) will be aligned to the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) and will span 20 cities in the seven states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. The ADKIC also proposes to leverage the existing Highway system on this route, and the Inland Waterways System being developed will connect the National Waterway grid

India’s first Iron & Steel Industry set up at Kulti, Bardhaman in 1870 Proximity to rich iron ore & coal reserves in the neighbouring states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa Accounts for about 10% of India’s total steel capacity 2 integrated steel plants, 1 alloy steel plant , large numbers of pig iron plants, sponge iron units and secondary steel mills located in the state 10 steel plants ( investment of Rs 109550 crore ) proposed to be set up Massive expansion plan of existing public sector steel plants In the period 1991-2010, 494 new Iron and Steel units were set up with a total investment of Rs 24837.13 crore 34 new Iron & Steel Units were set up with investment to the tune of Rs 10714.51 crore in 2010 Production of finished steel increased to 2686 thousand tonnes in 2009-10 from 1994 thousand tonnes in 2007-08 Production of semi finished steel increased to 3099 thousand tonnes in 2009-10 from 1759 thousand tonnes in 2007-08 In the year 2008-09 production of Crude steel - 4124 thousand tonnes Pig Iron – 909 thousand tonnes Sponge Iron – 1490 thousand tonnes
